Erin's Web Journal
November 28, 2006
It's been two weeks since my last update and I have many
pictures to share.  The jam at the Daily Grind on Monday
nights is still going strong and I so appreciate everyone's
support and participation.  Here's some pictures from the
last two weeks.
That's me with the two great trumpeters- Robert
Maxwell and Terry Dunn.
This is a new friend I have made recently. Pin Lim is
a great photographer and a really sweet person.  His
website is
www.forestphotography.com
This is what Tom Cummings looks like on most of
the breaks at the jam.  He is on his cell phone
talking to his fiance Linda in Canada, beaming
from ear to ear.
That's me with two great saxophonists- Archie
and Doc Peters.  Doc Peters wants to take
upright lessons from me so lookout.
Here's vocalist Julia Olivarez with Kent
and Joe Hanlon.  She left the jam early
to go catch Tom Wait's on David
Letterman.  I don't know if you know
this about Julia but she really really
likes Tom Waits.  Heh heh.
Congratulations to Doug Robertson for his
SECOND Emmy in sound design!
Angela Ceballos took time from her break
from teaching to come visit us.
Marcus Melchor sat in on tenor sax.  Marcus is
one of the most unique musicians I know in
Houston.
Other news from this week is the day before Thankgiving
someone decided in their rush to run me off the road.
My poor car.  The good news is no one was hurt.

That's Deborah Dunlap with Tom Cummings.  She has
recently unveiled
www.jazzhoustonradio.com which is an
online radio station that exclusively features recordings
by local artists in Houston.  Please visit her site and sign
up and give her site the five star rating it deserves.
Famous friends!  Stephanie and Andrew Lienhard visit
with Steve Brown who sat in for Tom Helton last week.
That's Naomi Barker and Sally Swiss.  Naomi is a
great friend and an awesome painter from the UK.
To the right is a picture of Naomi in front of one of
her paintings at an art opening.
This is Alex.  He is Tom Helton's student.  Each week
he learns a new tune and plays it at the jam. This
week he learned "Freddie the Freeloader".
I lost a good friend last week.  Jay Berg passed away at 81 years old last week.  He was a
great trumpeter who played with Charlie Parker and was the father of Shelly Berg who was
my teacher who turned me on to jazz and helped give me a big start in my career playing this
music.
Sally has two of Naomi's paintings and they are
awesome.
After the funeral there was a jam session at
Ovations to celebrate Jay's life.  Frank Tilton
owner of Ovations was kind enough to open
for this event on short notice. That's me with
Carol Sanders
This is Shelly Berg's son Kyle.  I can't
believe I babysat him.
Harry's daughter Susan was
layed to rest at this cemetary also.
Tom Cummings and Harry
Sheppard
I was very honored to play the funeral with
Clayton Dyess and Tom Cummings
It was great hearing Shelly and Tom play
duets again.
Old friends Shelly Berg and Tom Cummings.
Paul English and Shelly Berg.  Paul played
piano and flugelhorn at the jam.
This is Shelly's brother Mitch telling a funny
story.  The man with the trumpet is Jeff Jarvis,
great big band arranger and trumpeter from
Los Angeles.
